Georgian Police Clearance Certificate for Portugal
Why Portugal Requires a Police Clearance Certificate from Georgia
If you have lived in Georgia and are now applying for a Portuguese residence permit, long-stay visa, or citizenship, AIMA — Portugal's Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) — requires you to submit a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from Georgia as part of your application.
Portuguese immigration law requires applicants to provide criminal record certificates from every country where they have lived for more than 1 year before entering Portugal. Georgia is no exception. The certificate must be apostilled under the Hague Convention and accompanied by a certified Portuguese translation to be legally accepted by AIMA.
Since April 2025, AIMA enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for incomplete applications — if even one required document is missing or outdated at the time of your appointment, your application is automatically rejected with no opportunity to correct it. A missing or expired Georgian PCC will cost you your AIMA appointment slot entirely.
Through PCC.ge, you can obtain your official Georgian Police Clearance Certificate 100% remotely — without traveling to Georgia — with certified Portuguese translation and Apostille included.
Who Needs a Georgian Police Clearance Certificate for Portugal?
You likely need a Georgian PCC for Portugal if you:
-
Are applying for the Portuguese D7 Visa (Passive Income / Retirement Visa) and previously lived in Georgia for more than 1 year
-
Are applying for the Portuguese D8 Visa (Digital Nomad Visa) and resided in Georgia for more than 1 year
-
Are applying for a Portuguese Work Visa or Work Residence Permit and previously lived in Georgia
-
Are applying for the Portuguese Golden Visa and resided in Georgia for more than 1 year
-
Are applying for a Portuguese Student Visa (D4) and lived in Georgia
-
Are applying for Family Reunification (reagrupamento familiar) in Portugal and your spouse or family member lived in Georgia
-
Are applying for Portuguese Permanent Residency or Citizenship (naturalização) and previously resided in Georgia
-
Are renewing your Portuguese residence permit and your existing Georgian PCC has expired
-
Lived in Georgia for more than 1 year at any point before applying for your Portuguese immigration status
Important: AIMA requires criminal record certificates from persons aged 16 and above. If you lived in Georgia for more than 1 year after age 16, the Georgian PCC is mandatory.
What AIMA Accepts
AIMA accepts the Georgian Criminal Record Certificate issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, provided it is:
-
Official — issued by the Service Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia
-
Apostilled — under the Hague Convention (Portugal is a Hague Convention member, and apostille is mandatory for Georgian documents)
-
Translated — certified translation into Spanish or English.
-
Recent — AIMA requires the certificate to be issued no more than 90 days before your appointment or application submission date
-
Complete — since April 2025, AIMA rejects any application where the certificate is missing, expired, or incorrectly prepared
PCC.ge provides all of these in one complete package. You do not need to coordinate separate providers for the certificate, apostille, and translation.
The 90-Day Rule — Critical for Portugal
Portugal has one of the strictest document validity requirements in Europe. AIMA requires that your Georgian Police Clearance Certificate be issued no more than 90 days before your appointment or submission date. This applies to:
-
First-time residence permit applications
-
Residence permit renewals
-
Golden Visa applications and renewals
-
Citizenship applications
-
Any AIMA appointment where background documentation is required
This 90-day window is strictly enforced. A certificate issued even one day outside the window will be rejected by AIMA, and your appointment slot will be lost.
Because AIMA appointments in Portugal can be hard to reschedule — sometimes taking months to get a new slot — we strongly recommend ordering your Georgian PCC as close as possible to your AIMA appointment date. Our Express Package delivers in 2 business days, giving you maximum flexibility within the 90-day window.
Important: April 2025 AIMA Rule Change
Since April 28, 2025, AIMA operates a strict "complete application" policy. This means:
-
All documents — including the Georgian PCC — must be present, valid, apostilled, and translated at the time of your appointment
-
There is no grace period to submit missing documents after the appointment
-
Incomplete applications are automatically rejected — not deferred, not queued
-
You will lose your appointment slot and must reschedule
This makes getting your Georgian PCC correctly prepared — on time, apostilled, and translated — more critical than ever before.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long does it take to get a Georgian police clearance certificate for Portugal? A: Depending on your chosen package: 2 business days (Express), 7 days (Fast), or 10 days (Standard). All packages include the apostille and certified Portuguese translation. Because Portugal requires the certificate within 90 days of your AIMA appointment, we strongly recommend the Express package.
Q: Does the Georgian police certificate need to be apostilled for Portugal? A: Yes. Portugal is a member of the Hague Convention and AIMA requires an apostille for all foreign official documents. Georgian documents are not exempt from this requirement and must be apostilled to be accepted.
Q: Does the Georgian certificate need to be translated into Portuguese? A: Yes. AIMA only exempts documents issued in English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese from the translation requirement. Georgian is not one of these languages. A certified Portuguese translation is mandatory for your Georgian PCC.
Q: How long is the Georgian police certificate valid for AIMA? A: AIMA requires that the certificate be issued no more than 90 days before your appointment or submission date. This is one of the strictest validity windows in Europe. Order your Georgian PCC close to your AIMA appointment date — not months in advance.
Q: I have an AIMA appointment coming up. When should I order my Georgian PCC? A: Calculate backwards from your AIMA appointment date. The certificate must be issued within 90 days of that date. With our Express Package (2 business days), you can safely order up to 85 days before your appointment. We recommend ordering 2-4 weeks before to give yourself time to review the documents.
Q: Which Portuguese visa types require a Georgian police clearance certificate? A: Any visa or permit that leads to residency requires it, including: D7 (passive income), D8 (digital nomad), work visa, Golden Visa, student visa D4, family reunification, permanent residency, and citizenship. The certificate is required from anyone who lived in Georgia for more than 1 year after age 16.
Q: What happens if my Georgian PCC expires before my AIMA appointment? A: You will need to order a new one. Since April 2025, AIMA does not accept expired documents under any circumstances. If your appointment is rescheduled and your certificate expires in the meantime, contact us immediately — we can process a new one in 2 business days with our Express Package.
Q: Can I get the Georgian PCC without going to Georgia? A: Yes. Our entire process is 100% remote. You send documents digitally, sign an authorization form online, and our licensed Georgian lawyers handle everything in Georgia on your behalf.
Q: What if I had a legal issue or conviction in Georgia? A: Please let us know before ordering. Our lawyers can advise you on what the certificate will show and how to address this in your AIMA application.
